Tara carefully taped the tiny fresh diaper up and leaned over to drop some soft kisses to her son’s forehead. She earned a coo in return and smiled, brushing his fine blond hair back with her fingertips. “It’ll be good to get you home, A Stóirín. Out of these disposable nappies and into nice soft cloth ones, hmm,” she said in a hushed voice. She was getting him ready to put him down for the night and didn’t want to excite him too much. He reacted to voice and bright lights, so the room was dimmed.

She tucked his cute little feet into the blue teddy bear onesie and was started to clip the buttons up when she heard someone enter the room behind her. She was pushing her hair out of her face when her husband came up beside her looking a lot more crap than he had when he left a little earlier... )

47.5. Doubt (from Week 17)

[Follows THIS]

Tara was trying to remain calm and keep her emotions in check. It wasn’t an easy thing to pull off when you had enough hormones raging through your body that wanted to make you just sit and cry without stopping. By now, she was starting to really doubt her ability as a mother. Not only was her son not wanting a bar of her feeding him, holding him felt awkward and not at all natural like she was led to believe it would. But at least she could hold him now she got the strength back in her arms after the coma. Lachlan had bought her one of those trendy baby slings too so she could nurse him even if she was feeling tired. That had helped the hurdle she had of even just holding him for short periods of time, but now it was the breastfeeding. Maybe he just preferred a bottle because she was going to really suck at being a mother?

She kept her arms hugged securely around the little bundle he made, even in the swathe of soft blankets. He was so small and although she remembered how damn painful it was to push him out of her, he didn’t look like he should have hurt much at all... )

[Follows THIS and THIS]

If Tara had the current ability to follow through on every single one of her threats to her husband’s person, Lachlan Campbell would be nothing but a squashed, bloody mess on the floor of the birthing suite. His genitals would have been the first to go, and that would not have been a scene for the fainthearted. The whole Maternity ward now knew Lachlan’s penis should have been broken and that he was never, ever, ever having sex again. He also would have a bagpipe-shaped bruise across his forehead and be now walking with his head up his own arse. And all that was before Tara reached half-way through the labour.

It was now veering closer and closer to midnight, looking more and more like they were going to have a Boxing Day baby... )

34.1. Spend a rainy day with your partner

[Follows THIS]

The rain just didn’t seem to want to let up, though the mood it was creating seemed fitting. Tara pushed up onto her tiptoes and pulled one of their spare blankets down from the top of the wardrobe. She cursed softly under her breath when a pillow fell out and smacked her in the face. It’s probably something her husband would’ve laughed at if he’d been watching. He always had a cheeky sense of humour and laughing at each other was something they’d always been able to do. At least, they could most of the time.

She hugged the bundle of blankets to her chest and padded over to the bed where Lachlan was asleep, curled up in a ball on his side with his arm wrapped around his stomach... )

30.3. Do you listen to your partner?

Co-written with [livejournal.com profile] drcampbell. Set approximately two weeks ago, prior to THIS.

The thing about iPods is that they work very well in drowning out unwanted sounds. When you wanted to block out the surroundings and retreat to your own little world of bliss, bubble bath, strawberries, candles, and an iPod up as loud as you can stand it playing ‘The Best of the Eighties’ was absolute heaven. Tara kicked her feet in the warm water, sending a splash of bubbles slopping over the edge of the bath tub. No matter. She could clean it up later. She had her hair piled up on top of her head in a messy ponytail and a purple gel face mask strapped around her eyes obstructing her view of the bathroom, allowing her to really lose herself in the indulgence. She rocked her head from side to side to the beat, singing the current song at the top of her lungs and using the flute of bubbling non-alcoholic wine as a microphone.

WE SAY, SISTERS ARE DOIN' IT FOR THEMSELVES, STANDIN' ON THEIR OWN TWO FEET AND RINGIN' ON THEIR OWN BELLS!” She took a sip of the drink, still humming away happily at the tune.

It was her obliviousness to anything beyond her little bubble of relaxation that caused her to scream in fright when a soft hand touched her wet arm, setting off a chain of four things that happened in rapid succession... )

23.1 Spark

He’s lost the spark in his eyes. When he looks at me now, I can’t find that shine that I remember being drawn into that first night we met. The soft bluey-green is mixed with a heavy pain and I wonder now if they will ever shine again.

I don’t know how much more of this we can take... )
