Lachlan woke up so quickly and abruptly that he nearly fell off the recliner chair. He caught himself just before he ended up with any broken bones, but the groggy scramble to get up was anything but elegant. Tara looked up from where she was standing over the hospital crib and smiled softly in amusement. It took her husband a few moments to get his bearings before he spotted his wife with his son and he smiled sleepily as he shuffled his way over to her to wrap his arm around her waist and rest his head on her shoulder. “How is he?” he asked, his voice hoarse from the sleep.

Tara turned back to her son who was watching her intently while his little hand gripped around her thumb. She was using her other hand to gently massage his arms and legs to keep his blood circulating and remind him not everyone that touched him in this place was going to hurt him or prick him... )

And sacrifice my everything for just a second's worth
Of how my story's ending

Seeing the distraught state Tara was in sent a shot of panicked nausea through Lachlan’s stomach. He held his hand out as he breached the distance between. “Tara… baby, what’s the matter?” he tried again. Rationality told him it wasn’t anything wrong with their son because he had literally just gotten off the phone with his mother-in-law who had confirmed Riley was just fine.

“No!” Tara cried and tried to turn away from him. The single word came out in a choked sob and she shook her head. “Just stay there! I have to get rid of this! You can’t see it, Lachie, you can’t!”

Lachlan stopped where he was when she told him to and his eyes dropped down to what she was holding... )

Track 05. I can just imagine you and me (Kaiser Chiefs – 'Heat Dies Down')

PAST SCENE, JULY 2007

It really was a nice arse. It wasn’t very often he was found without a lab coat. It wasn’t very often he was found beyond theatres and exam rooms in nothing but pale blue scrubs that, despite intending to be loose, hugged all the right places when he walked. The back, too; muscular and toned through the thin cotton as he reached up to pull his surgical mask down and hang his stethoscope around his neck.

How easy it is to chew one’s nails off when having a good perve... )

3.2. "You know the great thing though? Is that change can be so constant that you don't even feel the difference until there is one. It can be so slow that you don't know your life is better, or worse, until it is. Or it can just blow you away, make you something different in an instant. It happened to me."
| Life As A House

It was the middle of the night when Tara woke suddenly from a deep sleep. At first, she couldn't get her bearings, feeling almost like she was suspended between sleep and awake. She couldn't place why she'd woken; it didn't feel like she'd had a nightmare. She could feel Lachlan's back and butt pressed against her side and his deep, even breathing told her it wasn't his distress that woke her this time either.

She leaned over to turn the light on and dimmed it right down so she could see Lachlan to make sure he was okay on sight. As she did, she became aware that Lachlan's oversized t-shirt she used as a nightie to sleep in was damp around the bottom of it. Fuck, had she wet herself - or worse - in her sleep? Sure, her bladder stamina was questionable right now, but she hadn't wet herself or wet the bed since she was a kid! She pushed sat up a little and pushed the covers down a little to have a look. As soon as she did, it felt like the bed was torn out from under her.

Blood. Everywhere.

All that she could emit was a small, terrified squeak. She was even in too much shock to scream. Her breath quickened to a dangerous pace, her stomach rising and falling rapidly in panic. She peeled the t-shirt back a little with her fingers, but it was sodden and sticking to her stomach, hips and thighs. Petrified tears started to stream down her face. "Lachie," she choked out through a sob. "Lachie!" she tried a little bit louder, grabbing his arm.

Lachlan mumbled in his sleep, but was roused as soon as she grabbed him. He turned, squinting in the light. "Hmm?" he murmured, barely awake. It took all of ten seconds for him to realise she was crying and he shot up in the bed. "Tara, what-" Then he saw it. The blood and his stomach lurched forcefully, but he only just managed to stop himself vomiting.

It felt like there was a rushing sound in his ears as he just stared at her lower body for what seemed like an eternity before something snapped into place inside him. Tears welled up in his eyes and spilled over, but protecting Tara overtook everything else threatening to come up inside him at that minute. "It's okay," he whispered, carefully peeling the covers down her legs. He grabbed her head and kissed her temple before cradling her against him. "We need to get you to the hospital," he told her. "It's going to be okay," he repeated, though he was crying himself now. He reached for the phone and dialled 911 to call for an ambulance. A minute later and after barely a few seconds contemplation, he punched in Pat's number.

Your muse hits shuffle on their musical contraption of choice -- what's the song and what do they do?

Tara cursed profusely as she stood from her desk and knocked a bunch of files on the floor. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d actually seen the surface of her desk and today seemed especially worse. It had been a hard and draining day. She needed to escape but with two weeks worth of discharge summaries screaming to be done, escaping wasn’t on the books.

With a frown, she pulled her iPod from her desk draw, untangled the cords from a mix of pens, paperclips and sugarfree gum. She shoved the buds into her ears and hit play. It didn’t matter what was on it; anything would do to drown out the din of the hospital. The first few bars of ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ by Phil Collins belted out in her ears and she grinned, shoving her current file to the side. It was the first song she’d danced with Lachlan to mere minutes after he’d gotten down on one knee and proposed to her, in a kilt and all. It was a perfect song for how their relationship had eventuated. Their song.

With a decisive smile, she shoved a piece of gum into her mouth and flicked her laptop closed. Paperwork could wait. Right now, she was going to find her fiancé and kiss the bollocks off him.
