22.5.6. A comforting moment

Tara shoved her hair out of her face as she unlocked the front door and nudged it open with her hip. She collected an armload of bags from the stoop and grunted softly as she carried them into the foyer of their home. She had spent the day shopping with Evie, the pair of them ending up in Babies-R-Us and having a field day spending loads of money. Everything from new cloth nappies to teething rings to a little baby drum kit was bought. It probably would have been cheaper buying shares in the company. Buying things for their wee boy, however, was never something Tara and Lachlan balked at. They only had one bite at the baby apple, and they wanted to enjoy every minute.

The only thing was, their wee Riley Patrick was growing up so quickly... )

Tara waved her hand slowly in front of her husband's glazed eyes and laughed when he blinked and turned to look at her with a sleepy smile. They were sitting in a second-floor bar on Princes Street in Edinburgh, the floor to ceiling windows giving them a pristine view of the Castle looming above them. It wasn't overly late and not quite dark yet, but it was dusk enough to bathe the historical landmark in a soft blue hue. After the harrowing flight from Princeton to Edinburgh, Tara had fully expected them to make it to Lachlan's parents house and beeline for the bed after getting their son settled in his crib. As they touched down, she had been fantasising about a snuggle in a comfy bed with her naked husband, and that really seemed to be the plan after they had a cup of tea with her in-laws and Lachlan's Nana while they gushed and cooed over the baby. But through the second cup of a tea, Lachlan's leg had been bouncing restlessly, and he soon declared that he needed to 'feel home'. He was exhausted himself. Spending a seven hour flight puking your guts up would do that. But he wouldn't be able to rest until had the sense he was home. Being in his childhood home with his parents and grandma wasn't going to cut it, it seemed.

After convincing Tara that their baby son would be fine with his parents for a wee while, Lachlan took his Dad's car and drove them both into the city centre, all the way up to the Castle esplanade. He had sucked in a deep breath of the Scottish air and ran his hands along the centuries-old cobblestones... )

Tara was walking backwards up the path to their front door and nearly went arse over tit on a pot plant by the door but caught herself just in time. “Have you got him? You’ve got him, haven’t you? Have you?” she said fretfully, watching her husband handle the baby capsule as he walked behind her. He had her overnight bag slung over one shoulder and the brand new blue tartan baby bag over his other, both hands snugly gripped around the handle of the capsule.

“I’ve got him, beautiful,” Lachlan assured her, walking carefully on the wet path. “If I had him anymore, I’d break the bones in my hand. Watch where you’re going, darlin’. I’m nay having you end up back in hospital when I only just got you both home.”

Tara waved her hands. “Don’t hold him tighter, then! If you hold him tighter and break your hand, you’ll drop him! Here, let me take him. I’ll take him.” )

The young night Maternity nurse couldn’t help but smile in amusement at the crowd squished into the waiting room for Baby Campbell. Barely even two hours old and he was already a star around the hospital with a large personal cheer squad to boot. “I’m looking for a Riley and a Patrick. Campbell Godfathers, I believe?” she asked, looking around expectantly.

Riley shot up out of his seat, gesturing to Pat in the wheelchair. “That’s us!” He cleared his throat. “I mean, um, is everything okay?” )

Lachlan watched as Aiden got a little passionate with the new Nintendo Wii controller and flung it across the room mid tennis swing, only missing hitting Cameron in the head by inches and taking out a picture frame on the wall. He put his hand over his mouth in a shocked gasp as everyone burst out laughing and reminded him he should have the wrist band on. Lachlan sniggered and pushed the piano bench over to where Tara was sitting on the sofa beside Evie and Riley and tucked it up close to her so he could take her hands in his. “How are you feeling, beautiful?” he asked her and kissed her palms with a happy smile.

Tara smiled with a nod. “Wonderful,” she assured him... )

It wasn’t late by any means, but Aiden’s large and modern Upper East Side apartment was quiet, save for the soft lull of the television in the living room. Tara tied the sash on her bathrobe loosely around her pregnant belly and shuffled into the room with a small yawn. Pat was there curled up on the sofa with a blanket wrapped around his legs and his wheelchair within easy reach. On the recliner beside him, Aiden was sprawled out asleep with one arm hanging over the side of the chair. It had been a tiring day for everyone.

Pat smiled up at her softly and pulled the edge of his blanket back so she could join him on the sofa. “Hello, darling,” he murmured. “I wasn’t expecting to see you again until the morning. How is he?”

Tara cuddled in close beside Pat and tucked the blanket around them both as she stole a quick glance at the television to see if anything interesting was on. “Not so great, but he will be. We just needed to be close.”

Pat gave her a small knowing smile... )

The jealous cry
I didn’t want to lose him, but I didn’t deserve to want that. He wasn’t mine. We were flirting and dancing around each other, nothing more. I had no claim on him. I had no right to be jealous. But I was. I was so jealous it ate me up inside and threatened to engulf me. Why was he hugging Cameron and not me? The rumours he was dating her couldn’t be true, could they? He would’ve told me. But did he have to tell me? Was the charming, attentive chivalry all just an act to bed her? Only, he hadn’t bedded her, had he? They kept getting interrupted like it just wasn’t meant to be.

I wanted to storm up to him and smack him for making me feel jealous. I wanted to call Cameron all the horrible names under the sun and warn her to never touch him again. What was wrong with me? I had turned in to a monster and all because of that achingly addictive presence with too beautiful a smile, too nice a butt, and too gorgeous eyes for his own good. He hooked me. I couldn’t stop the tears. I didn’t want Cameron to have him…

I wanted him.

He was the love of my life and he was dying in my arms... )
